How to thaw, steam and store fresh dog food in a Malaysian kitchen
A KL kitchen is warm all year, so the fridge does more of the work than it would elsewhere. Here's the routine from freezer to bowl, and the few rules that keep it safe.
In the freezer
Packs arrive frozen and go straight into the freezer. Keep them there until the night before you need them; they keep for 2 months frozen.
Thaw in the fridge, never on the counter
Move tomorrow's pack from the freezer to the fridge tonight. By morning it's thawed and still cold. Leaving a pack out on a Malaysian counter to thaw faster is the one shortcut we ask you never to take: it's raw meat in a warm room.
Once thawed, keep it in the fridge and use it within 3 days. Never refreeze a pack that has thawed.
Steam for 15 to 20 minutes
Tip the pack into a heatproof bowl, set it in a steamer or over a pot of simmering water with the lid on, and steam for 15 to 20 minutes, until it's cooked through. Let it cool until it's just warm, then serve.
Leftovers and the bowl
Steamed food you don't serve straight away keeps in the fridge for 2 days at most. Anything still in the bowl 30 minutes after you put it down goes in the bin; fresh food shouldn't sit out, least of all in this heat.
Wash the bowl, your hands and the counter after each meal, the same as with any raw meat.
Can I steam a few days at once?
You can steam up to 2 days' worth and keep it in the fridge, which is the 2-day leftover rule. Beyond that, thaw and steam as you go. The packs are small on purpose so that one night in the fridge is all the planning you need.
Everything here is feeding guidance from a kitchen, not veterinary advice. Pets on medication, pregnant, very young, very old or unwell: ask your vet before changing their food.
